3 Day Expedition Course

The three day expedition course is designed for those who have already learned the basic rescues and strokes and are looking to do multi-day trips on their own.  Though we will travel from island to island by kayaking, sleeping in tents, mileage will not be a priority.

We will spend time working on efficient packing, navigation, low impact travel and camping, stroke refinement and rescues with loaded kayaks.  This would be a great next step for a paddler who has completed our 3 Day Fast Track or a Level I and Level II.

Open Water Intensive

This three day, two night advanced course takes place on Vinalhaven Island in the middle of Penobscot Bay and is perfect for the paddler who has taken our Level I and Level II courses or our 3 Day Fast Track and wants to build on those skills and learn new ones associated with open water kayaking.

This course is a great opportunity to apply your previously learned kayak handling skills while enhancing your skills and knowledge of open water rescues, towing and navigation.

Additional topics of instruction include campsite selection, island use and ethics, weather conditions, tides and currents and paddling in the reversing falls of “The Basin”.

Expected open water conditions include 3 – 5 foot sea swells , 3 – 5 mile open water crossings and camping on remote islands.  We provide all necessary paddling and safety gear.  Participants need to provide their own tent, sleeping bag and pad, tow belt and personal gear.  Tents, sleeping bags and pads can be rented from Maine Sport Outfitters.

Meals will be provided with lunch on Friday and ending with lunch on Sunday.

Course begins and ends on Vinalhaven Island, which is accessible by State Ferry Service from Rockland.  Contact us if you would like to bring your own kayak as that requires special handling on the ferry.  All ferry and travel fees are in addition to the course fee.
