Wilderness Medicine Courses

In 2017, Maine Sport Outfitters will offer a variety of Wilderness Medicine Courses. The courses will be offered at Maine Sport Outfitters in Rockport, with the exception of the 5-day WFR course, which will be offered at our Gay Island Lodge in Muscongus Bay.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

IMG_0857This 2-Day, 16-hour course taught by the professional instructors of the Wilderness Medical Associates, will prepare students to manage a medical event in the back-country. This course is perfect for those that engage in day or overnight trips or are looking to become outdoor professionals. Topics include the assessment and management of traumatic injuries, circulatory, nervous and respiratory system problems, common injuries such as blisters, sprains and strains, and use of improvised materials in remote settings. Upon completion, students will receive a 3-year WFA Certification that includes anaphylaxis training. A separate CPR workshop will be offered as part of the class.

Open Re-certification

This course is offered to recertify those who currently hold a WFR or WEMT certification. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will recertify their Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, BLS, and CPR certifications. WEMT graduates with a current EMT-B or Paramedic certificate can receive recertification for the wilderness component of their WEMT.

5-Day Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

IMG_0895The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) was created to provide outdoor leaders, search and rescue team members, and individuals working or recreating in remote wilderness settings the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with medical emergencies in the field. The 5-Day WFR format adheres to the same standards as the Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) 8-Day WFR format and is the first aid course required for most outdoor professionals working in remote areas.

Topics covered throughout the duration of the course include patient assessment, environmental and back-country medicine, musculoskeletal problems, wound management, wound cleaning, splinting, bandaging, spine injury assessment, dislocation reduction, CPR and anaphylaxis.

Enrollment in the course must be complete no later than 2 weeks prior to the course start as 20-30 hours of pre-course work is required before the start of the course. Students must be at least 18 years old to participate in the course. No previous medical training is required.
